snow now more likely monday through early tuesday

1/14/2024

As of mid Sunday afternoon, an arctic front has pushed through the DC area. Wind gusts to 45 mph were reported with the frontal passage. Temperatures have fallen rapidly across the area.
This will make for a particularly cold MLK Day, with temperatures not getting above freezing for most of the area. There is now a good chance for light snow to push across the region during the day, beginning in the afternoon. It is not out of the question that snow may even begin in the morning, with the best chance for the southern suburbs. The timing sped up due to computer models indicating one piece of the disturbance tracking more northward than previously expected.
Some light snow will likely continue Monday night into early Tuesday. Precipitation looks to clear out Tuesday afternoon, with bitterly cold air being the main story heading into Wednesday.
The map indicates my current thoughts for total snowfall accumulations across the area. Travel impacts are certainly possible from this event. Temperatures Monday morning will start off in the mid 20s.
There may be some changes to this forecast, so stay tuned!
