September 10th, 2020 - 2020 Flash Flooding Event Across the Suburbs of Washington, D.C.

During the morning on Thursday, September 10th, 2020, a tropical batch of rain showers moved into Washington, D.C. and the surrounding areas. Just before 1:30PM, rainfall rates began to significantly increase, as a heavier batch of precipitation moved into the area.

Rainfall rates of well over one inch per hour, and as high as three and a half inches per hour, were denoted by radar simulation. In total, between two and five inches of rain fell across the area, most of which fell within a two hour timespan. The highest rainfall report was found in Hyattsville, Maryland, totaling just under six and a half inches. In many places, such as Brentwood, Maryland, this type of rain event would typically only occur once every ten to twenty-five years. This extended period of heavy rainfall led to significant water level increase along many bodies of water in the area. Flash flooding along low-lying, poor drainage, and flood-prone areas occurred.
