drenching rain to start the weekend

3/22/2024

A Flood Watch from the National Weather Service is now in effect for Southern MD from 2AM through 2PM Saturday. For the 9th time in the past 15 weeks, a significant rainstorm will impact the region. A coastal storm developing along the Gulf Coast this Friday will lift northward tonight, tracking up the Chesapeake Bay Saturday and then into the Northeast.
Rain will begin around late this evening or around midnight. The heaviest rain is expected late tonight through Saturday morning, with rain tapering off by the end of the afternoon. Rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches are expected, and much of that may fall in a short time window. This will lead to the potential of flooding, even though we have not had much rain in nearly two weeks.
Temperatures on Saturday will be in the mid 50s for the morning and afternoon. It will also be particularly windy at times. A brief surge of strong winds is possible late Saturday morning, followed by consistent strong wind gusts in the 35-45 mph range late in the day. Saturday evening, the strong winds behind the storm will result in rapidly falling temperatures. Overnight lows will be in the lower 30s.
Expect sunshine on Sunday, although it will still be a chilly day with high temperatures in the lower 50s. Winds will gradually start to slacken during the day, although there will still be gusts of 20-30 mph. Monday will be chilly again with sunshine. We may warm up slightly for Tuesday.
