heatwave to slacken early this week

6/23/2024

Saturday was the hottest day in Southern MD since 2019, as the temperature at the Pax River base reached 100°. After starting off with morning lows in the upper 70s to lower 80s, temperatures are back near 100° this Sunday afternoon in the area. The Heat Advisory from the National Weather Service continues until 7PM. With the high humidity, we will continue to see heat index values around 105-109°.
There is some potential for showers and thunderstorms beginning late this afternoon, but more so in the evening. Isolated thunderstorms are already developing near the area. Any thunderstorms may become strong to severe, with strong winds being the main hazard.
The good news is that a cold front will sweep through Monday morning. This will allow the heatwave intensity to back off, and there will also be a drop in humidity by the afternoon. Actual temperatures will top out around 90° and there will be a breezy north wind at 15-20 mph.
Tuesday will feature similar conditions. Another surge in scorching heat will come on Wednesday, with thunderstorms possible by the end of the day.
