slippery travel conditions persist into tue with dangerous cold settling in late

1/15/2024

As of mid evening Monday, accumulating snow has ended for nearly all of Southern MD. Snowfall amounts have been in the 1-2" range across the area, which is right in line with my expectations. I measured 1.5" in California. However, there is still some concern for patchy freezing drizzle across the area later tonight. Slippery travel conditions are expected to persist for the rest of the night into Tuesday morning. All three county public school systems, CSM, and the Pax River base have announced a two-hour delay.

For Tuesday, temperatures are expected to hover right around or just slightly above freezing for the morning. With a good chance for lingering drizzle or light rain, this may freeze on some contact with some surfaces.
All precipitation is expected to clear out by late afternoon. Temperatures look to nudge upward to around 35-37°. This situation will need to be watched, as the trend in some of the newest computer model guidance has been for a colder solution. Dangerously cold air will then settle in. Once the sun sets, temperatures will plummet, with overnight lows in the teens. It will also be windy, making for a notable wind chill factor.
