update on snow for friday night

2/16/2024

The Clipper system set to bring snow to Southern MD is pushing through the Midwest as of early Friday afternoon.
TIMING: Snow will arrive in our area around midnight, with rain likely mixed in initially for a large portion of Southern MD. All snow will clear out by late Saturday morning.
IMPACTS: Despite this being a fast-moving storm, indications are that snowfall rates will be moderate to heavy in the 2-4AM timeframe. With the exception of the far southern end of St. Mary’s, I do think this will lead to untreated roads being snow covered, making for slippery travel conditions. Temperatures will be around 32-34° for this event.
AMOUNTS: With the rain/snow line likely to bisect Southern MD for part of the duration of the event, I think we may see a significant variation in impacts over small distances. As I mentioned previously, these forecast amounts will be affected by a minor change in the storm’s track. In collaboration this afternoon with others on the Foot’s Forecast team, we are also monitoring some possible trends that could lead to lower amounts across the entire region. However, it is hard to say until we get closer to the start time if this will be the case.
AFTER THE STORM: Temperatures will rise to the upper 30s by the afternoon, and with some sunshine snow will quickly start to melt.
